On the 22nd of April, the South Freo music students had a special visit from local Fremantle band Koi Child. The band played a set and then did a short, jam/song writing demonstration followed by a Q&A about how they got together, their musical experience and how they write their songs.
Students took to Koi Child’s mix of electronic, hip hop and jazz very well, dancing their through the performance and full of questions in the workshop.
Constantina Tsioutsias, year 8 said “The music was like creating a whole different genre with rap and jazz mixing. We helped ourselves to the dance floor and it was amazing. Everyone was jumping up and down. We could see how every band can do it’s own thing…they don’t need to be normal”.
Highlighting the fusion between musical styles and arrangements, Loche Hopper, year 10, said “The mix between a brass section and hip-hip was a good combination because it’s funkier than normal jazz music. As a bass player I enjoyed hearing the effect of a strong bass line on the arrangement”.
Sam Newman, the band’s trombonist and an ex South Freo music student said, “It was really nice to come back here and see what has become of the program I was in years ago. To see it this developed is really great”.
