Wednesday 24th June was Senior Showcase night at the music centre where a small but supportive audience was treated to some fantastic performances. The show began with year 11 students who performed a mixture of reggae and jazz before launching into an extended piece which made use of the skills they have learnt from former student, Sam Newman, who played with two of his own bands in Whole Program workshops earlier in the term.
This piece integrated pre-recorded samples and loops with live performance to create an evolving soundscape. Presenting a gift and card to Sam, year 11 student Jasmine Kelly explained to the audience how grateful the students were for all of the extra time and energy Sam put into this project. Sam commented afterwards “It’s amazing to see how far they have come in such a short period”.
The second half of the showcase featured our year 10 bands who demonstrated how far they have progressed this term and, in particular, the impact of a project they have worked on this term with trainee teacher Gary Benness, which focussed on ‘groove’. Both bands delivered tight, polished and highly entertaining sets.
The next challenge for our senior students is to promote their performances to generate larger audiences.
