As part of the Music Enrichment Workshop Program at South local singer/songwriter, Helen Shanahan, presented an inspiring and informative workshop to music students in the art and business of making a living from music.
Accompanied by Matt Alan, a vocal teacher at WAAPA, the performance and workshop provided many useful tips and tricks for South’s Specialist Music students.
Helen, a WAAPA graduate, described her beginnings at open mike nights playing original songs, her training at WAAPA and her ongoing professional work.
“Seeing her perform with Matt and seeing her convert her bubbly personality into a performance was a great experience” said Jessah Sta Ana, one of the year 11 Music students.
Helen talked about techniques she uses to manage performance nerves and encouraged all students to “start recording yourself on your devices and playback the recording to see what you can improve on”.
She also described winning a national competition to perform in Canada later this year. In particular she looked forward to the opportunity to grow musically and to expand her audience into another country.
All Music students enjoyed an inspiring and informative session with Helen and Matt. To find out more about Helen have a look at www.helenshanahan.com.
